The Not Princess
The Not Princess
I am not looking for a knight.
I don’t want a prince.
Someone to take care of me
Is not what I need
I lift heavy things and open jars
Earn and spend
Paint the house and build the barn
If the trash is full, I can take it out.
So, no, I do not need a savior
A hero or even a handy man.
I just want you.
To see my sadness and let me
Say it aloud.
To catch my laughter when it
Bubbles over
I don’t want to be carried or rescued.
Run with me. Dance with me.
Admire my strength and give all
You have of yours.
To delight in my conversation
And the luxury of my eyes upon you
To burst towards me with open arms
Despite my empty hands
See me as no saint, no puritan, no prize
No wild thing, no judge, no princess
Just see me.
Scars on my legs and polish on my nails.
Look upon me and say with open eyes
Tell me.
Everything.
